XOCHICALCO, Morelos

 |
 |
Xochicalco was a fortified city with restricted entrances. Large stairways were built within it, framed by
balustrades decorated with moldings and finished with dados, which led to the large plazas. However, in
order to enter these plazas, one had to cross a portico which prohibited passage of more than two or three
people at a time, thereby automatically limiting access. The porticos were rectangular shaped buildings
with horizontal "U" shaped walls and pillars which supported a flat roof. These buildings were modified in
order to additionally obstruct passage. Human skeletons, which probably were of individuals killed during
the revolt which destroyed the city, were found on the floor and under the roof of these buildings.
EN ESPANOL: Xochicalco era una ciudad fortaleza en la que los accesos estaban restringidos. En ella
se construyeron grandes escaleras, delimitadas por alfardas decoradas con molduras y rematadas con
dados, que conducen a las grandes plazas. Para entrar a estas plazas, sin embargo, habia que cruzar un
portico por el que no pasaban mas de dos a tres personas a la vez; era esto, precisamente, lo que
permitia el control del acceso. Los porticos eran edificios de planta rectangular con muros en forma de
"U" acostada y pilares que sostenian un techo plano de terrado. Estos edificios fueron modificados para
obstaculizar aun mas el paso de las personas. En ellos se encontraron esqueletos humanos sobre el
piso y bajo el techo, probablemente de individuos muertos durante la revuelta que termino con la ciudad.
